Community Garden Open Day Research

Man Alive Community Garden Project Update

As many readers will know Slow Food Waitakere and Man Alive are scoping a project that  supports  Man Alive to establish a community garden for their clients and families.

Man Alive
Man Alive is dedicated to working with men and boys and the issues that affect their lives.
You can find out more about them and the important work they do at

The Vision for the Community Garden
We envisage  that the garden will resemble the English 'allotment' model where men and their family/whanau can be allocated an area of land to develop a garden, maintain it and hopefully feed their family from it.

First Steps
Understanding  what "makes" a successful community garden will be key to the project's success so we were very excited to take part in the West Auckland Community Garden Open Day on  March 24th

The Gardens
Our group visited 3 gardens - Ranui Community Garden, Woodside Community Garden and Millbrook Edible Garden - and were warmly welcomed by the dedicated volunteers that make them happen. We also formed important connections, that will help and support us as we move forward. And we learned a lot about the highs and lows of community gardening!
